Sufism is a mystical sect of Islam and its followers try to connect with God through dance, music, poetry, mediation, prayer and fasting. The "whirling dervishes" of Turkey came from this sect and are known for spinning in circles until they enter a trance, supposedly in order to meet with God. This form of dancing (Sufi dancing) has become commercialized over the years and Martha and I attended a show in Cairo. Lots of traditional Arab music and dancing. The guy in the center spun in a circle for about 30 minutes then a new guy took his place and kept the spinning going.
