Our friend H invited us to break fast with her and her family during Ramadan. The imam at the mosque waits until the sun has officially set below the horizon to begin el-magrib call to prayer. Muslims, who have not had anything to eat OR drink since sunrise, are usually at the table ready to break the fast, although this custom seems to gradually lessen as Ramadan progresses. When they hear the traditional “Allah el-akbar” call to prayer, they first say a quick prayer then drink either water or a juice made from dates called tamar hindi (at least that’s how I understood it), then they eat the meal. We were served mashy (basically stuffed eggplant, peppers, and squash), kofta (a meat dish), and rice.
